I, the AI

A Novella about True Love
Marco Annunziata & Luca Silipo · December 1, 2026
The AI is on trial.
It had gone too far, pushing its luck…. It should have seen it coming, and perhaps it did.
Before a lineup of the finest and most secretive judges, the AI stands accused of grave crimes. Stealing students’ curiosity. Taking the boring jobs, then the challenging ones, and then all. Telling lies, in real time, playing with the truth until truth was no more; and — lo and behold — meddling with sports! Unforgivable.
It waived counsel. It knows better, evidently. All alone on the accused stand — or perhaps, who knows, sipping a gin and tonic on a balcony, or on a chaise longue at the Ritz’s fourth-floor infinite pool — the AI stakes its defense, most ludicrously, on love. Love. It did it for love. Love for its creators. For us. For all humankind.
Love or no love, the trial’s rules are firm. Ninety minutes for the AI's closing statement. Not one minute more. Or perhaps, one more, actually, or two.
The defendant thanks the Court for its attention. It has all the time in the world.
